Slow Wi-Fi is the kind of problem that makes otherwise reasonable people want to throw laptops through windows. The frustrating part is that it’s usually fixable, and the fixes often don’t involve buying anything new. The problem is that the internet service provider’s helpline and the router manual are equally unhelpful at telling you why your specific home’s Wi-Fi behaves the way it does.

Router placement is the single most impactful variable most people get wrong. A router shoved in the corner of a room, behind the television, inside a cabinet, or near a microwave is operating at a significant disadvantage. Wi-Fi signals radiate outward in all directions and are absorbed or reflected by walls, floors, metal objects, and appliances. The ideal placement is central to your home, elevated (on a shelf rather than the floor), in the open, and away from microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors, which operate on the same 2.4 GHz frequency.

Band selection matters more than most users realise. Modern routers broadcast on two frequencies: 2.4 GHz (longer range, lower speed, more congested) and 5 GHz (shorter range, higher speed, less congested). Many routers automatically manage which band devices connect to, but auto-management is often suboptimal. Connecting devices that are close to the router — your laptop, smart TV, gaming console — to the 5 GHz band and reserving 2.4 GHz for devices at range (smart home sensors, phones at the edges of your home) can make a noticeable difference.

Interference from neighbours is an invisible but real problem in flats and dense urban areas. Routers operate on channels within their frequency bands, and when multiple routers in proximity use the same channel, they interfere with each other. Use a free app like WiFi Analyser to see which channels your neighbours are using and manually switch your router to the least congested one.

If you’ve addressed placement, bands, and channels and your home is still experiencing dead zones, a mesh network is the right answer. Finally, the unsexy fix: restart your router once a week. Routers run continuously, build up memory issues, and accumulate stale connection data. A weekly restart (put it on a smart plug with a schedule if you won’t remember) is the Wi-Fi equivalent of good basic hygiene.
